Giving it another go…..

•May 2, 2012 • Leave a Comment

So with the amount of stress I face on a daily basis, I thought it would be good to start posting in here again…..so for my first post back lets do something positive. How about my ten favorite moments from today.

1. Seeing several kids raise their hands with a desire to remove the conflict between them and God.

2. Charliann letting me hold her in the chair while she wound down after a long day.

3. Enjoying dinner with Kerri while watching one of our favorite shows.

4. Seeing 29 kids in youth because our kids invited their friends.

5. Reading my prayer requests from a couple years ago and being encouraged to write again.

6. Talking to my best friend and setting up a double daddy/daughter date.

7.  Getting almost my COMPLETE to-do list done for this week.

8. Getting some good basketball in before youth.

9. My Larry’s Sub…so DELICIOUS!

10. Finding a baby sitter for Charli on Friday…a HUGE blessing for me.

More to come tomorrow…when I am better rested.

Why don’t we defend Jesus?

•July 24, 2010 • Leave a Comment

I ran into an old friend of mine the other day. I was in Walmart wandering around, looking to spend money I didn’t have on things I didn’t need when I saw him buying a box of Apple Jacks and a copy of Stargate. I started telling him how I was just wandering Gainesville waiting for Kerri to get off work so we could go on vacation. He laughed and said there wasn’t much to wander in Gainesville. He kept going on about how he was outta this dump and start his life in someplace more civilized. I found myself pretty perturbed that he would be bashing my hometown.

I realized that we get so defensive when someone talks negatively about our hometown, or our favorite books and movies. About our family members no matter how bad they deserve it. If someone questions our favorite restaurant we tell them they’re mistaken. We hold so strongly to our preferences yet when our spiritual lives come under scrutiny we back off. If our church or Pastor offends someone we go to their aide even if they’re wrong. If someone talks bad about our church we support their decision to go elsewhere. If gossip threatens to tear our churches apart we look the other way. Worst of all we discount or ignore what Christ calls us to do because it’s rarely convenient and almost never popular. By calling ourselves Christian and acting this way we’re showing how little we trust Christ and that the truth is we don’t believe what we say we do.

Give me some hope in this area, how have you stood up for the truth this week?

This Week in Ministry

•July 11, 2010 • Leave a Comment

It seems I can barely keep my head above water over the summer. With all the youth activities, vacations and school work my life doesn’t have alot of down time. This week is going to be particularly trying. I’m going to try to each week post up some ministry prayer requests up here and would greatly appreciate some prayer.

  • Building Information Meeting – Please pray for our church as we discuss building a new family life center
  • Camp Share Time – Pray for those sharing about the awesome week we experienced at camp this year.
  • VBS / Middle School Bootcamp Kickoff – I’ll be leading five days worth of festivities for the middle schoolers. Prayer please!

What do you have going on this week that needs prayer?

Wednesday Prayer Day

•July 8, 2010 • Leave a Comment

Technically it’s Thursday but I haven’t gone to bed yet so it’s Wednesday still for me. Feeling kind of weird so it’s time to do some praying.

  • Jesus, be with my wife as she goes to work tomorrow. Help her to focus on you and not let her chaotic surroundings get her down.
  • Thank you for my mom as her birthday was this past week. Give her a great year and help me to bless her as she blesses me.
  • Jesus I pray for my brother Logan. Help me to show him Your love.
  • Please keep Rachel, Innocent, and Padiga safe
  • Please be with Graham and his wife
  • Keep the Vaughns safe while they are on their mission trip
  • Help me to be ultra productive tomorrow
  • Thank you for my wife and our relationship
  • Thank you for being there for me when I need it most
  • Help me to stand strong for your truth and not be swayed by the Devil’s schemes

Amen.

Top 10 Tuesday – Top 10 Moments at Camp

10. Peanut Butter Break a Chair Boy – One of Wade’s illustrations involving a boy who painted himself for peanut butter for the sake of laughs. Had me in stitches.
9. Ryan getting scared by Joey “The Pretty Pink Princess” Silvia – It was quite a sight to watch Joey prance around the guys dorm room in a gold cape with a pink tiara. The only thing that made it better was him sneaking up on Ryan and scaring the boy into the hallway.
8. The Ice Cream Sandwich Eating Competition – While I was ECSTATIC when I found out there were all you could eat ice cream sandwiches, nothing could prepare me for the competition that took place the last full day of camp. Joey started it by shoving a whole ice cream sandwich in his mouth. I thought it was a peace of cake and shoved two in my mouth before choking and spitting them out. Tracy shoved two in without even flinching, then she stuffed her fingers in her mouth and spread them out to make room for another sandwich. Then the biggest mouth of them all, Brad, piled four in his mouth like it was nothing.
7. Sean getting in trouble – Not a misprint, my brother, the epitome of a well behaved child was among a group of hoodlums that received a twenty minute lecture from one of our adults. While I was not happy with the misconduct I had to high five him for coming out of his shell.
6. The Super Early Morning Show – Last years Celebration was poor at best. This year was much closer to classic Student Life. The Characters had me in stitches!
5. Tuesday Nights Cryfest – All the good camps have one and even though it’s somewhat “taboo” for a man to cry, it’s always a good release for me. Our last night of camp was one of deep appreciation and desire to grow closer to God.
4. The Photo Scavenger Hunt – I had never done one of these before but it couldn’t have gone any better. Take a look at Madhouse Ministries facebook page to see the entries. Watching both groups get way outside their comfort zone for the chance at a victory. I got to spend some time with the guys and it was so cool to watch them get excited at the chance to get handcuffed and thrown in the back of a police cruiser or do some kung fu fighting in a chinese restaurant. Awesome times.
3. Random Acts of Kindness – Something else I had never done before. We went into a mall with the desire to do nice things for people just to show Christ’s Love. We split up into several groups and started walking around. My groups first stop was pretty disheartening. We went into JC Penny’s and asked if we could help them put garments back on racks or take garbage out. The manager informed us that that was not possible. I didn’t see what the big deal was but he asked us to go ahead and leave if we weren’t going to buy anything. Then we went to the mall manager to see and he said the same thing. Then we decided to do a shotgun approach and hit every store. Before the end of the day we had entered every store and were given tasks ranging from taking garbage out, to washing windows, to restocking shelves. It was much more successful when we stopped focusing on big opportunities and tried to help everyone and anyone we could.
2. Mattress Jousting – the brain child of James Emery, Brad and Dawson Steele. It involves two opponents, each holding a mattress in front of them and then charging towards each other. When done at an optimal speed and with great connection you get a simulated sonic boom and if you’re mismatched with a much smaller opponent you get to watch them bounce around the hallway like a pinball. “How about we NOT touch it!”
1. Sponsoring two kids through Compassion International – Easily my favorite memory of camp. In one of our pastors meetings the purpose and mission of Compassion International was brought up. Kerri had sponsored an Indian girl in 2004 and my Mom had sponsored several children over the years but I never had the tug. To save you from the long story (which will be coming in the next couple weeks or so) I sponsored a 5 year old girl from Nicaragua and a 7 year old boy from Uganda. Their names are Rachel and Innocent. I look forward to communicating with them in the near future and will bring you their messages.
So that’s it….my top ten memories of this last year at camp. Check back next week for another top 10!
